Foundation for Springfield Public Schools and Local Law Firm Strive to Keep Students Safe on Prom Night

The 6th-annual Safe and Sober Prom Night kicks off April 1, 2010.  The program is a partnership of the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, and Kurt Larson of Larson Law Firm, as well as many area businesses and organizations who support the program.  This year, 20 area high schools and more than 7,500 students are participating in the program, representing 200% growth in participation since its inaugural year.

Safe and Sober Prom Night is designed to keep our students and others from being injured or killed on prom night by raising awareness of the dangers of drug and alcohol use.  Kurt Larson has spent 18 years representing area families devastated by irresponsible drivers.  To kick-off this program, Kurt gives presentations at each of the high schools, offering our young adults a glimpse of the criminal, civil, and practical consequences the decision to use drugs and alcohol can have on their future.  The timing is perfect for this message, as our soon-to-be graduates are stepping into adulthood and beginning to make real investments in their future.

Larson encourages our students to take a pledge - a written commitment to their parents - to stay drug and alcohol free on prom night.  Parents receive a letter explaining the program, giving them tips for prom night safety and are encouraged to support their student in the decision to stay sober.  It is then up to the students to pressure each other to take and keep that commitment.  Students are given incentives to keep their commitment, including a chance to win cash. Students are also provided with pledge cards, wristbands, t-shirts, and/or window stickers to outwardly show their commitment to remain free of alcohol and drugs.  ALL THIS AT NO COST TO OUR SCHOOLS.  By the end of this year’s program, more than $160,000 will have been raised and donated to our students and their schools through this innovative program.

This program has garnered the support of organizations throughout the community.  The following either endorse or support the program financially: MoDOT, Regional Coalition for Roadway Safety, O’Reilly Automotive, Wal-Mart, Liberty Bank, Mattax-Neu-Prater Eye Center, St. John’s Health Systems, Drury University, Community Partnership of the Ozarks, Springfield Neurological & Spine Institute, Great Southern Bank, Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, Ozark Mountain Chapter MADD, Missouri Highway Patrol, Greene County Sheriff’s Department, Greene County Prosecutor, Springfield Police Department, Ample Industries, 417 Magazine,  Strong-Garner-Bauer Law Firm, David Ransin, P.C.Attorney-at-Law, Jim and Nancy Claxton, the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys, and Kurt and Sally Larson/Larson Law Firm.
