Scholarship Established in Memory of Central High School's Haley Stevens

In December of 2009, the Haley Stevens Fine Arts Scholarship for Central High School was established by the family and friends of Haley Stevens.  The Haley Stevens Scholarship will assist and motivate students to pursue an education.

Haley Stevens begin showing signs of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) when she was 15 years old.  She had been active in theatre, choir, dance and Kilties, but was beginning to show signs of the disease.  In March of 2008 she was diagnosed with ALS.  Haley had a great impact on everyone around her.  With the help of tutors and and teachers at Central, Haley managed to graduate in May of 2009.

In September of that same year, Haley passed away, leaving a legacy of hope and inspiration.   She requested a scholarship be made in her memory as a way to thank the Central students for their loving support.

Chase Card Services Donates $9,000

The JP Morgan Chase Foundation donated $9,000 to the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools this December to purchase technology at Ed. V. Williams Elementary School.  The gift will purchase five interactive white boards known as SmartBoards, for the first, second, third and fifth grade classrooms.

Chase Card Services is a Partner in Education to Williams, a Title I school in Springfield Public Schools.  Williams Elementary principal, Jennifer Webb said, “The addition of five SmartBoards will dramatically increase the levels of student engagement and interaction levels in our classrooms which will in turn improve student achievement levels in mathematics, communication arts and content areas.”

Williams Elementary was recently on the receiving end of several other Foundation grants during the Foundation’s 2009 Back to School grant cycle, including three high impact grants which also included several other schools and programs.
