Seniors Receive Support from the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools
The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools and representatives presented more than 70 scholarships to graduating seniors at Bailey, Central, Glendale, Hillcrest, Kickapoo and Parkview high schools this year. Recipients were recognized at award banquets and ceremonies across the district in late May.
The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools manages more than 90 funds and scholarships to benefit the students of Springfield Public Schools. The vision of the Foundation is to promote educational excellence for every child by working with the public school system and the community. Students, Schools Recognized at Safe and Sober Prom Night Awards Assembly
More than 60 people, including representatives from Springfield Public Schools, the business community, law enforcement, parents and students of Springfield Public Schools, attended the fifth annual Safe and Sober Prom Night Awards Assembly Thursday, May 14th, where all students, schools and sponsors were honored for their participation in this extraordinary program. Also, five lucky students representing the five Springfield Public High Schools were recognized for their commitments to remain drug and alcohol free on prom night. Each winning student received $1,000 for their participation in the program. The winning students were:

Back to School 2009-2010 Campaign is Underway
The Foundation's annual campaign which raises funds to support the Back to School grant program in already underway. The Foundation will award Back to School teaching grants to teachers and principals across the district in late August or early September of 2009, just in time for the new school year.

Five Teachers Honored for Excellence in Teaching Reading
On Monday, March 30th and Tuesday, March 31st the 2009 recipients of the Turner Awards for Excellence in Teaching Reading were named by the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools. The five teachers honored this year were:
- Gwen Jones, Portland Elementary
- Lisa Burton, Field Elementary
- Barbara Mooneyham, Greene County Juvenile Justice
- Rebecca Donaldson, Campbell Elementary
- Shari Balla, Shady Dell Early Childhood
Started in 2002 by the Turner family of Springfield, the awards are given to five outstanding teachers each year who go above and beyond to teach reading to their students. The award includes a cash prize of $2,000 awarded to each teacher which is split between the recipient and the recipient’s school. The recipients were chosen by a panel of judges comprised of community members, Foundation for Springfield Public Schools board members and district representatives.

Foundation for Springfield Public Schools to Match Gift From Community Foundation of the Ozarks
The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools is adding a new component to its annual Back to School grant program thanks to a matching grant from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks in the amount of $37,960. Both Foundations will fund the new grant category which will offer higher dollar grants to schools with a high percentage of students receiving free and reduced lunch rates.
Safe & Sober Prom Night Kicking Off its Fifth Year
The fifth annual Safe & Sober Prom Night, spearheaded by Kurt Larson of Larson Law Firm and managed by the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools will kick off this April 1st. This year 19 area schools including all five Springfield Public High Schools will participate in the program. Designed to keep students and others from being injured or killed on prom night, the program raises awareness of the dangers of drugs and alchohol use. Students who participate in the program by signing a pledge to remain drug and alcohol free have a chance at winning a cash prize. Last year nearly $10,000 was awarded to Springfield Public Schools and its students.

The Linda Luke Librarian of the Year Award was established in 1997 in honor of the late Linda Luke, a librarian in Springfield Public Schools. $100,000 Gift has Impact for Special Education Student in Springfield Public Schools
The Special Education Department of Springfield Public Schools received a $100,000 gift from John and Crystal Beuerlein on Friday, December 19 through the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools. John Beuerlein, the brother of Jennifer Beuerlein, Assistant Director of Special Education, was on hand Friday morning to present the donation at a check presentation.
This gift is being used to meet the needs of the special education department in Springfield Public Schools. Amy Krause, Director of Special Education, announced that because of this gift over 55 projects have been funded and over 1600 special needs students have been impacted. Some of the projects that have been funded include auditory listening devices for students with autism, classroom technology and other instructional materials for students with disabilities.
Chase Card Services Presents McGregor with SmartBoard Grants
On Wednesday, December 17, Chase Card Services through the JPMorgan Chase Foundation presented three teachers at McGregor Elementary School with grants to purchase SmartBoards for three classrooms. One classroom from the second, third and fourth grades will receive SmartBoards through the Foundation's Back to School grant program. Chase representative and Foundation board member Michael Replogle presented checks to Jan Taylor's third grade class, Holly Klier's second grade class and McGregor principal Jeff Thornsberry.
St. John's Clinic Raises $50,000 for Care to Learn
St. John's Clinic, Forces for Good presented a check for $50,000 to the Care to Learn Fund, a program of the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, on Tuesday, December 16. Care to Learn represenative, Doug Pitt and Foundation for Springfield Public Schools executive director, Nancy Fazzino were on hand to accept the donation which will support students of Springfield Public Schools through items such as underwear, socks, coats, hygiene products and bus vouchers among others.
Foundation Gives over$150,000 to Springfield Public Schools
On Tuesday, November 25 the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools awarded over $150,000 to Springfield Public Schools. The Foundation awarded School Improvement Plan (SIP) funding to each school in the district and Back to School grants to 33 schools and programs.
Co-chairs of the 2008-2009 Back to School campaign, Brent Baldwin and Sandy Howard made the announcement at a grant breakfast this morning. Howard announced that the Foundation awarded just over $47,000 in funding to each school for School Improvement Plans and just over $100,000 in grants. She handed out the first grant check of the 2008-2009 campaign to principal, James Grandon of Boyd Elementary who spoke at the breakfast. Boyd Elementary also received three other grants this year.
Grants were awarded by way of surprise visit to teachers across the district by Foundation staff and volunteers. The Foundation awarded 21 grants for technology such as SmartBoards, 22 grants for equipment such as books and computer software and 19 grants for special projects such as field trips.
Executive Director, Nancy Fazzino awarded grants at Pipkin Middle School. “It was so great to see the excitement on the faces of the students and teachers when they learned their grant was funded. The Foundation board members and volunteers are thrilled to be a part of the Back to School campaign and thankful to make a difference for teachers and students,” said Fazzino. Pipkin received four grants this year.
